World Nomads is probably Australia’s best known travel insurance company. They’ve been in operation since 2002, and their insurance policies cover people from over 150 countries.
Note: World Nomads is the correct spelling, but we’ve also seen the company called worldnomads, worldnomad, world nomad travel insurance, Lonely Planet Travel Insurance, and nomad insurance.
World Nomads is probably best known as travel insurance for young gap year backpackers, but they do offer insurance for anyone, including families and those going on shorter trips, as long as you’re under 70 years of age.
When we got a quick quote with them, they offered us two types of policies, the Standard and Explorer policies. Both policies offered medical travel insurance, trip cancellation insurance, and baggage insurance, but the Explorer policy had higher coverage limits.
World Nomads discount code for Australia
We tried several promotion codes for World Nomads, but only found one that works:
WNFIND5 – it gave us a 5% discount. Not bad!
Here’s how to enter the promo code:
Type your information (age, travel dates, country of origin and where you’re travelling) on the World Nomads get a quote page.
When your quote appears, there’s an area just above the total where you can enter the promo code for World Nomads.
Type the promo code and click APPLY. Your new price, with the discount, is shown.
Tip! You MUST click the APPLY button. If you just click Buy Now (at the bottom of the page), your discount isn’t taken off the price.
What we like
World Nomads is likely the most well known Australian travel insurance provider, and they’ve often increased that visibility by partnering with companies like Lonely Planet and Intrepid Travel.
- quotes that we got were competitive
- easy to use online quote system
- sith a bit of digging, you can probably find a discount code for World Nomads
- you can buy travel insurance, extend and even claim online.
- you can buy travel insurance after you’ve left Australia. We found very few companies seem to offer this, making World Nomads one of the few choices we could find if you’ve left on on a trip, but forgot to buy travel insurance.
- you can add extra coverage for expensive personal items, and add cover for adventure, sports, work or volunteer activities
What we don’t like
- you must be under age 70 to get World Nomads travel insurance

The Standard package policy had $5 million in overseas medical costs, $3,500 trip cancellation, and $2,000 theft or damage to baggage and personal items.
The Explorer package policy had unlimited overseas medical costs, unlimited trip cancellation, and $10,000 theft or damage cover for baggage and personal items.
What did World Nomads travel insurance cost
We got a quote for a 25 year old Australian traveling for two weeks to Bali.
The quote was 70.50 AUD (before discount) for the Standard policy, and $86.00 AUD (before discount) for the Explorer policy.
Important: Your cost will vary, depending on factors like where you travel to, how long you’re gone, and your age. World Nomads offers different prices and policies depending on numerous factors.
Policies and coverage can change at any time, without warning. This article is only intended as general advice. Please check your own policy carefully and visit the World Nomads website for specific, up-to-date quotes and policy information.
